Readership

All those interested in Turkic studies with the focus on the Crimea
and its historical contacts with Central Asia and Turkey, as well as
the history of the Crimea and the etymology of Crimean habitation names.

About the author(s)

Henryk Jankowski, Ph.D. (1987) in General and Ural-Altaic Linguistics
at Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznan, is Professor of Oriental
Languages at the same university. He specializes in Turkic languages,
with his main interests being Crimean Tatar and Karaim.

This dictionary, the first of its kind in Turkological studies, will
prove to be an invaluable research tool for those studying the Crimea,
Ukraine, as well as Eurasian Nomadism. It is the result of year-long
painstaking research into the etymology of Crimean pre-Russian
habitation names, providing insight into the Turkic, Greek, Caucasian
place-names in a comparative context, as well as the histories of
these cities, towns and villages themselves.

The dictionary contains approximately 1,500 entries, preceded by an
introduction with notes on the history of the Crimea and the structure
of habitation names. For the reader's convenience, many entries are
classified in indices which follow the main part of the book.
Additionally, three detailed primary source maps, separately indexed,
are appended to the dictionary, as well as a map showing the
administration network of the Crimea at the end of the Crimean Tatar Khanate.

Hill, Linda L. 2006. Georeferencing: The Geographic Associations of Information

Hill, Linda L. 2006. Georeferencing : The Geographic Associations of Information. Cambridge, MA: MIT Press.

Now available Cloth • 7 X 9, 272 Pp., 74 Illus. ISBN-10: 0-262-08354-X ISBN-13: 978-0-262-08354-6 2006 • $35.00

An introduction to the principles of unified georeferencing, which uses placename and geospatial referencing interchangeably across all types of information storage and retrieval systems.

Georeferencing—relating information to geographic location—has been incorporated into today’s information systems in various ways. We use online services to map our route from one place to another; science, business, and government increasingly use geographic information systems (GIS) to hold and analyze data. Most georeferenced information searches using today’s informa- tion systems are done by text query. But text searches for placenames fall short - when, for example, a place is known by several names (or by none). In addition, text searches don’t cover all sources of geographic data; maps are traditionally accessed only through special indexes, filing systems, and agency contacts; data from remote sensing images or aerial photography is indexed by geospatial location (mathematical coordinates such as longitude and latitude).

In this book, Linda Hill describes the advantages of integrating placename-based and geospatial referencing, introducing an approach to "unified georeferencing" that uses placename and geospatial referencing interchangeably across all types of information storage and retrieval systems. After a brief overview of relevant material from cognitive psychology on how humans perceive and respond to geographic space, Hill introduces the reader to basic information about geospatial information objects, concepts of geospatial referencing, the role of gazetteer data, the ways in which geospatial referencing has been included in metadata structures, and methods for the implementation of geographic information retrieval (GIR).

Georeferencing will be a valuable reference for librarians, archivists, scientific data managers, information managers, designers of online services, and any information professional who deals with place-based information.

Hill, Linda L. is Specialist, Department of Geography, University of California, Santa Barbara (retired).

The Great Silk Road guide. Map of the Silk Road

http://www.orexca.com/silkroad.php

Silk Road trade routes
[...] On the way of the caravans there were rich settlements and towns - Merv (Turkmenistan); Bukhara, Samarkand, Urgench and Khiva (Uzbekistan); Otrar, Taraz and Chimkent (Kazakhstan); Dgul, Suyab, Novokent, Balasagun, Borskon, Tash-Rabat, Osh and Uzgen (Kyrgyzstan).

The first, the Southern branch, ran from Termez via Samarkand to Dushanbe's present location, along a tributary of Kyzyl-Su up to Alai and exited to the area of modern Irkishtam, where it switched direction towards Kashgar.

The second, the Fergana branch, led from Samarkand via Hodjent to Isfara, Kokand and Osh.

The third, Northern branch came from Zamin Rabat to Benkent (Tashkent) , Isfidjab (Chimkent), Taraz (Jambyl), Nuzket (Kara-Balta), and Balasugun (Burana). From there caravans traveled along the Boom Canyon to get to the area and further to China across the San-Tash range.

The caravan traffic proceeded at a slow pace. A good day's journey covered 8 farsahs (50 km), a not so good one 4 farsahs (25 km). The composition of the caravan trains varied. There are numerous records of some huge trains containing up to 10.000 beasts of burden. All along the route, caravan-sarais (meeting places) appeared at regular intervals[...]

Digital Silk Roads Project (DSR), National Institute of Informatics (NII), The Toyo Bunko, Tokyo, Japan

Self-description:
"The purpose of the project [which is a cornerstone of the Digital Silk Roads Project (DSR) (dsr.nii.ac.jp) - ed.] is to make 'invisible' books visible from everyone. Today surprisingly many books are invisible from the general public because accessibility to precious books is restricted due to their fragility and safety. To let them come out of the dark rooms of libraries, we establish the digital archive of precious books and improve accessibility to them on the Portal site. [...] [In Sep 2006] The digital archive [presented online] the collection of 53 rare books (19 authors : 13,973 pages) with narratives about Silk Roads."
